On August 14, 2017, at about 12:28 P.M., officers with the Redding Police Department responded to a report of an argument occurring between two males at a residence located in the 1800 block of Stetson Way. The caller reported one of the involved males might be armed with a knife.
Upon arrival, officers found the victim, Paul Douglas WILKE (67 Years of age) of Redding, suffering from multiple stab wounds to his head and arm. WILKE, who’s confined to a wheelchair, was brought out of the residence by officers to receive immediate medical treatment. Officers subsequently located the suspect, Mark E. O’NEAL (65 years of age) of Redding, in one of the bedrooms in the residence. O’NEAL, who’s a cancer patient, was found to have sustained a laceration to his left hand. It’s believed O’NEAL received the injury while assaulting WILKE.
According to other residents, O’NEAL threatened to kill WILKE today. While both subjects were in the bedroom they share with a third male, O’NEAL was observed arming himself with a knife or similar weapon and then he began stabbing WILKE without provocation. At one point during the attack, O’NEAL came out of the bedroom and said, “Call the paramedics he’s hurt pretty bad,” before returning inside the bedroom.
Both subjects were taken to a local area hospital for treatment of their injuries, which weren’t believed to be life threatening. Once medically cleared, O’NEAL will be booked into the Shasta County Jail for attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and making terrorist threats.
