On Thursday, September 29, 2016 at 6:36 p.m., deputies were dispatched to East Stillwater Road near Highway 299 after receiving multiple reports of a man dressed in all black clothing with a handgun in that area. A passerby also reported seeing the man pointing the handgun at the ground. Deputies quickly arrived on scene and found a male subject matching the description provided by witnesses.
The initial responding deputy observed a man dressed in black clothing standing behind a telephone pole along the west roadway edge of East Stillwater Road. The man began to motion for the deputy to come closer. The investigating deputy ordered the man to drop his weapon and observed him place an object on the ground. Deputies then detained 39-year old Ryan Thompson of Redding, California. After detaining Thompson, the investigating deputies retrieved the item(s) Thompson placed on the ground and determined it was a hat and a loaded semi-automatic pistol.
Thompson told the investigating deputies he armed himself with a firearm because another person was chasing him. Thompson displayed objective symptoms of being under the influence of a Central Nervous System Stimulant and appeared to be hallucinating while talking with deputies at the scene. After a thorough area check, no evidence of a second person was located and Thompson was taken into custody without incident.
Thompson was booked at the Shasta County Jail for being under the influence of a controlled substance while in possession of a firearm and other firearm related charges.
