On Friday, August 5th, 2016, at 10:43 pm, deputies were dispatched to an in-progress residential burglary in the 13000 Block of Hidden Oaks Trail Redding, California.  The reporting party observed an unknown male enter her vehicle.  When residents told the man to leave, he responded by asking for the keys to their truck.  While the reporting party was on the line with the 911 operator, the man broke out a window near the front of the residence and switched off power to the home.   The residents barricaded themselves in a bedroom while deputies were en route.

Deputies of the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office arrived within minutes of the initial call for service and located 46 year old Jay Steven Nicholson of Redding, California in the driveway of the victim’s residence.  Nicholson was beneath an unoccupied vehicle, which was parked in front of the residence.  Responding deputies ordered Nicholson out from under the parked vehicle; however, he pretended to be sleeping and ignored their request(s).

A brief struggle ensued when Nicholson failed to obey the commands provided by arresting deputies, but he was eventually taken into custody.  The motive in this matter is not clear. Nicholson appeared to be under the influence of narcotics, and alcohol seemed to be a factor.

Nicholson was booked at the Shasta County Jail for Burglary and Attempted Auto Theft.  This matter is still under investigation by the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office.
