The History of Marie’s Auction—A Soroptimist Family Tradition
Marie Burke was a charter member when Soroptimist International of Redding was
founded in 1946. The club needed a way to finance the expenses of delegates to
Regional Conference and Federation Convention. So, in 1949, Marie started holding
auctions every year just before the Thanksgiving holiday. She not only auctioneered but
also donated all of the goods for the auction from her own pantry – homemade jellies,
jams, canned fruits and vegetables and of course, baked goods.
“Marie’s Auction” soon became a successful fundraiser and too difficult for one person
to carry the responsibility, so the other club members joined in and began to bring in their
own homemade items and handcrafts.
In 1987, Marie Burke auctioneered her last “Marie’s Auction”. She was not well at the
time, but stayed at the podium until the last item was gone. A few weeks later, she went
into the hospital. Marie died on January 28, 1988. Her memory lives on as we continue
with the tradition of “Marie’s Auction”.
