On October 26, 2018 at 11:36 P.M., Redding Police Officers responded to the North Bechelli River Trail access and dog park area for a report of suspicious activity.
Officer Leonard was the first to arrive on scene. He made contact with two subjects in a vehicle located near the entrance to the river trail access.
Officer Leonard immediately spotted a handgun lying on the floor of the vehicle near the driver’s feet. When backup Officers arrived, they detained the two subjects. The driver was later identified as Christopher Kirchner, 27 years of Redding. The handgun was determined to be a replica that had been altered to look like a real firearm. A second replica handgun was also located in the vehicle. The passenger was released with no charges.
During a subsequent search of the vehicle, Officers located a billy club, narcotics and a large ring of automobile keys including a shaved key used to access various types of vehicles.
Kirchner was arrested and booked into the Shasta County jail for possession of burglary tools, altering a replica firearm, possession of narcotics, and other drugs not prescribed to him.
