In the midst of the worst drug crisis the country ever has seen, cutting financial assistance for approximately 7 million Americans is potentially catastrophic. Addiction is a disease that requires ongoing medical attention – not a decision, as has been the historical depiction. Failing to treat it as such breaks the promise to which everyone seeking medical care is entitled: First, do no harm.
