On Monday, February 11th, 2019, at 10:46 p.m., an employee with Siskiyou Forest Products, located at 6275 State Highway 273, Anderson, reported an alarm at an office/shop building located on the property. The employee reported he had security video of an unknown subject walking inside the shop building.
Deputies with the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office arrived at the business minutes later and met with the employee who reported the incident. The business is located on a large piece of property, with numerous buildings, stacks of lumber, and vehicles and equipment spread over multiple acres of land.
Deputies began searching the buildings and grounds of the business with the assistance of Shasta Lake City’s Sheriff’s Office K-9 “Hondo”. While “Hondo” was searching one of the buildings containing numerous large stacks of lumber, he alerted to the presence of a subject inside the building. Deputies located a male subject lying on his stomach at the top of a tall stack of lumber, approximately 30 feet high. The subject was ordered down from the top of the lumber and detained. The subject was identified as Christopher John Smith, 40 years-old from Redding. A large bag filled with power tools and equipment, later determined to be taken from the shop building, was located next to the stack of lumber where Smith was found hiding. The power tools and equipment were returned to the employee on the scene. Smith was also found to be in possession of suspected methamphetamine.
While deputies continued to search the surrounding area, they located a vehicle parked across the highway from Siskiyou Forest Products. The vehicle was warm to the touch and was parked in a suspicious manner. Through the investigation, the vehicle was determined to be Smith’s. Upon searching the inside of the vehicle, deputies located additional stolen property, including tools from a previously reported burglary at Siskiyou Forest Products. Deputies also located stolen property from two previously reported burglaries which had occurred in the City of Redding. The property was returned to its owners.
Smith was arrested and transported to the Shasta County Jail for booking on charges of 459 PC – Burglary and 11377(a) H&S – Possession of a Controlled Substance. Smith is pending additional charges which will be sent to the Shasta County District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.
