On July 16, 2017, at 5:05 p.m., officers from the Redding Police Department responded to 7-11, at 1801 Eureka Way, regarding a suspect causing a disturbance and vandalizing property. The suspect was later identified as Enrique Lopez, 22 years, of Shasta Lake City.

Lopez initially entered the store while consuming an open alcoholic beverage. Lopez was asked to leave the property and went out to the front of the store. Lopez finished his beer and went back into the store to buy more alcohol. The store clerk refused to sell Lopez alcohol at which time Lopez selected some ice cream and started to exit the store without paying for it. Lopez was confronted by the store clerk’s brother, Pankaz Gill, 29 years, of Redding. Lopez and Gill became involved in a physical altercation over the ice cream at which time Lopez threatened to shoot Gill with a gun.

Lopez was pepper-sprayed during the fight by the manager and threw an empty bottle at the front door of the store, causing it to shatter. Lopez left in a vehicle but returned a short time later. Lopez armed himself with a knife and was re-approaching Gill when a Shasta County Sheriff’s Deputy and Sergeant arrived at the business. They attempted to contact Lopez; however, he resisted their attempts to detain him and was arrested after a struggle. Lopez was transported to the hospital for a medical clearance and was later booked into the Shasta County jail by the Sheriff’s office for felony resisting arrest and by the Redding Police Department for robbery, felony vandalism, and terrorist threats.
