Robert Calvin Butler, 97 of Shingletown California died 31 May 2018
Robert Calvin Butler passed away 31 May 2018 at the age of 97 at Marshall Hospital, Placerville, California. Robert was the son of William Butler and Olive (Davis) Butler. He was born on 20 August 1920 in Eureka, California.
Robert, aka Bob, was a U.S. Navy Veteran, serving during World War II. Bob was the last known survivor of the sinking of the S.S. Jean Nicolet on 2 July 1944 in the Indian Ocean, 700 miles south of Ceylon by the Japanese submarine I-8. Out of the 100 men on board the ship, only 23 survived the sinking. Bob was held captive aboard the I-8 and jumped off saving his life. Bob received the following medals: Prisoner of War Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Medal and World War II Victory Medal.
Memorial Services will be held at the Northern California Veterans Cemetery, 11800 Gas Point Road, Igo, California 96047 on Friday, 20 July 2018 at 9:30 am. Conducting the memorial services will be Pastor Michael Steiner.
The Navy Honor Guard will perform the Honor Ceremony.
