On Thursday, Sept. 21, 2017, at  9:52 p.m., a sheriff’s deputy was at Mercy Hospital handling a call for service as a white Ford Explorer arrived at the hospital with a gunshot victim, identified as Robert Curtis Burlew, 50 years old.  Burlew had a single gunshot wound to his forehead and needed immediate medical attention although he was conscious.  Burlew was driven to the hospital by his friend, Victor Donald Beaubier, 50 years old from Anderson.   Also in the vehicle were witnesses Gabrielle Obrien, 23 years old and Jadanna Kuykendall, 39 years old.

The initial report about Burlew’s condition was reported that while they were all traveling on Churn Creek Road in the Explorer, an unknown subject shot Burlew.  Upon further investigation by deputies, the involved parties statements were conflicting.  Detectives with the Major Crimes Unit were contacted and responded to assist.

After additional interviews of the involved parties by detectives, it was learned the shooting was accidental and occurred in a garage at 5815 Telephone Gulch Road, Anderson (Happy Valley) as Beaubier was attempting to attach a makeshift stock out of PVC pipe fitting for a 22 rifle.   While Beaubier was trying to attach the PVC pipe fitting to the rifle’s frame, the rifle discharged subsequently striking Burlew in the forehead who was approximately 10 feet away from Beaubier in the garage doorway.  The round did not exit Burlew’s head. After the shooting, Burlew was helped into the Explorer and taken to the hospital for treatment.   Burlew remains at Mercy Hospital in critical condition.

Beaubier was arrested for 246.3 (a) PC: Negligent Discharge of a Firearm causing great bodily injury and 29800 (a) (1) PC:  Felon in possession of a Firearm based upon Beaubier’s various prior felony convictions.  Beaubier’s bail has been set at $25,000.00 and he will be arraigned next week.  Additional charges may be filed against Beaubier pending Burlew’s recovery.

If anyone has information regarding this incident they are asked to contact the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office, Major Crimes Unit at 530-245-6135 or mcu@co.shasta.ca.us.
