Erratically acting subject becomes unresponsive and dies at Shasta County Jail

On April 11, 2017 at about 4:00 p.m., the Redding Police Department responded to Mercy Medical Center regarding a person running around the parking lot and acting erratically.  An officer arrived on scene a short time later and learned that Security Officers had detained a male subject outside of the Emergency Room.  The man was displaying obvious signs of being under the influence of narcotics and was arrested.  The man was compliant and offered no resistance. There was no force used during the arrest.

During the booking process at the Shasta County Jail, the man became unresponsive. Jail staff rendered medical aid immediately and an ambulance was summoned. The man was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

The Redding Police Department Investigations Division initiated an in-custody death investigation. The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office, Anderson Police Department, Shasta County District Attorney’s Office and the California Highway Patrol assisted with this investigation.

The man’s identity will be released when next of kin are notified.
