On June 30, 2017, CAL FIRE Law Enforcement Officers seized several hundred
pounds of illegal “dangerous” fireworks from an individual who had been advertising and selling fireworks online. Officers secured a transaction site in the Redding area and a purchase of fireworks was made. Immediately following, California Highway Patrol Officers, with the assistance of CAL FIRE Law Enforcement Officers, conducted an enforcement stop of the suspect vehicle. A search of the vehicle revealed the subject was in possession of approximately 300 pounds of “dangerous” fireworks, which are unlawful to possess in California. CAL FIRE Law Enforcement Officers arrested Jonathan Ponce 22, of Wheatland, California for selling and possessing “dangerous” fireworks. Ponce was booked into the Shasta County Jail for possession of greater than 100 pounds of fireworks.

CAL FIRE reminds residents that all fireworks are illegal in Shasta County. Hot and dry
conditions this time of year make for explosive conditions which can lead to catastrophic loss of life and property.
