By Palomino Armstrong,
The emergency call came in a few hours ago. So now I am packing the truck and trailer and we are heading to WA.
COPPER’S CHANCE arrived at Mama Mel’s Urgent Care Nursery, (our satellite facility in Toppenish, WA) just about the time I received the call. Matt and I were on a supply run, so now that we are finally home, we are loading everything and heading out tomorrow.
COPPER’S CHANCE is truly a miracle. Out of the 12 babies that were spotted stuck in the snow with their bands, nine or more have passed from the brutal conditions. The status of the other two babies is unknown this evening, but there will be more coming home to Chilly Pepper, whether it is this trip or next week?
COPPER is already a thousand dollar baby. By the time we purchase this beautiful little girl, pay the EMERGENCY VET BILL, and get there to pick her up, we will have over a thousand dollars invested in this little girl.
This past year has been filled with brutal heartbreak. Cleaning up after others who neglected and abused animals is often too much. But today we have a chance to help save this baby.
She is hypothermic, dehydrated and is very thin. Her poor Mama was giving her baby everything she had, and the mare may not even survive. The rescue was treacherous and dangerous, and everything possible is being done to help these wild horses.
At least now, both mama & baby have a chance. Copper would most likely not have survived another evening, which is clear by her condition. Her mama had no milk and needs every bit of what she has to possibly survive.
This is just the beginning. We have been shopping for milk and the supplies we need, but we are far from where we need to be to “git ‘er done”. We know there are more babies dropping all the time, and you can see many, many, heavily pregnant mares standing in the deep snow.
We want to thank EVERYONE who has been donating and making it possible to accomplish what we have up til now.
But IT IS GO TIME! These babies are going to need even more care than normal. Mama Mel is setting up in our warm, insulated nursery and will be taking care of COPPER’S CHANCE until I can get there. I should be there tomorrow evening. She is getting warm milk, being offered munchies and has received warm IV fluids, and other meds. Her journey will be a long one, but hopefully she was saved in time.
THANK YOU FOR ALWAYS BEING THERE FOR THESE HORSES! YOU HAVE SAVED SO MANY! PLEASE LET’S CONTINUE THIS AMAZING, LIFE-SAVING JOURNEY TOGETHER!
