Trailhead Youth Ranch is sponsoring a Horse and Mule Packing Clinic from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 28, and Friday 29, and 10:00 am to 4:00 p.m., on Saturday April 30 ( Sat, bring a lunch.) All equipment will be provided and clinic will be limited to eight participants. The location of the packing clinic is at the south east corner of the intersection of Hwy 44 and Millville Plains Rd. Turn right onto Millville Plains, go a quarter of a mile and turn left at the Meadow Ridge Ranch sign. They ask if you can close the gate and drive to the red barn in the distance.
The instructor will be George Archer, a lifelong packing student and enthusiast. He has taught packing at Shasta College and at various Back Country Horseman clinics. In addition, George has taught and guided horse and mule packing trips through Kidder Creek Camp, Trailhead Youth Ranch and Back County Horsemen. He is also a certified US Forest Service Leave No Traces horse camping instructor.
The agenda consists of:
—Thursday and Friday evenings- US Forest Service Leave No Traces back country guidelines. Discussion and demonstration of basic packing techniques and skills. Hands on instruction using packing dummies. Hands on instruction using horses and mules.
—Saturday morning and afternoon- Pack up horses and mules, lead them to the top of the mesa and set up a mock camp.
The cost of the clinic is a tax deductible $25 donation to Trailhead Youth Ranch to cover expenses.
